Food Allergy & intolerance week 2010

This week - 25th-29th January 2010, it's food allergy and intolerance week. It seems the perfect time to tell you, for those who don't know, that we offer a wide range of cakes suitable for those with food allergies and intolerances. We specialise in gluten free and dairy free cakes, and we have a selection on offer daily, we also make birthday cakes and cupcakes and slices to order for any special occassions you may have, or just to enjoy at home. We also offer a gluten and dairy free alternative to our traditional afternoon tea at bake-a-boo, which must be booked in advance.
In addition to the gluten and dairy free cakes, we also offer egg free and sugar free cakes as well. As I am gluten and dairy intolerant, I know how hard it can be to find foods which you can enjoy, and how it is especially hard to eat out. When I created bake-a-boo I wanted to create a place where there would be something for everyone, and I hope most food intolerances are covered cake wise, so that most people can find something to eat safely at bake-a-boo. Unfortunately as we do cook with nuts in our kitchen, we cannot offer nut free, but we hope to make life more enjoyable for the time that you are with us, for the gluten, dairy, egg and sugar free-er's amongst us!

From the 24th of February until the 8th of march, at bake-a-boo we will be hosting an exhibition 'Years of Romance' - a photographic tribute to a glamorous life. A collection of remastered and digitally enhanced photographs taken from the glamorous life of the actor Ballard Berkeley. The images cover the period 1920-1939 and include publicity photographs for the theatre and cinema. Hosting this exhibition is particulary special to me as Ballard Berkeley was my grandfather. My father recently dug out several old photographs of Ballard for a documentary 'Fawtly Towers re-opened' which aired in 2009. He then digitally enhanced and restored several of the photographs and has now compiled this exhibition. Seeing these photographs has allowed me to learn so much about my grandfather's acting career and life, as I was very young when he died and I only really knew him as 'the major' in Fawtly Towers, it has been lovely to experience some of his other chararcters through these photographs. I hope that you will enjoy the photographs in the shop during this time.

Sorry for the utter silence in blogland lately - sadly in November we got broken into at the shop and our camera was stolen, so we haven't been able to take any pictures to keep you up to date with our goings-on, so I have been quiet - anyway -I'm back, new camera and back in action, we have so much going on in the next few months that I have so much to report, so it's good to be back.
Anyway here's some new pics from the weekend - we celebrated Ruth's hen party on Sunday and here's some pictures of her afternoon tea party, before the hens arrived to devour the lot. They had full afternoon tea and rounded off the afternoon decorating cupcakes. Congratulations Ruth x

We are currently closed during the festive period, as it is such a quiet time for us on our hideaway street! But in the mean time the bake-a-boo fairies are looking after the shop for us. They are all pretty special to me, in fact the first fairy here has been with us since day one, she was a gift when we opened the shop and has hung from the chandelier ever since, although she did tragically loose her legs, she lost none of her power......and yes I do believe in fairies! This is a gorgeous photo that my very talented sister took of some of our mini cupcakes. She always takes beautful photos, not just of our cakes, but of everything. She captures many precious moments through her lense and I only wish I could take photographs like her, but I make cakes and that's my thing I guess?

Christmas late night shopping evenings

This Thursday 10th December, bake-a-boo is having a late night opening with Inside story (50 Mill Lane) We may not be Oxford street!! But both shops offer gorgeous home furnishings, Christmas gifts, art and cards from local artists, Christmas decorations and edible gifts, as well as decorated Traditonal Christmas cakes, and on this evening, as well as the following Thursday 17th December - you can browse whilst enjoying complimentary wine or mulled wine and nibbles. Come and visit us both between 6pm and 8:30pm, and you may just find the perfect gift without all the stress! See you there xx

Catch me this Saturday afternoon at the Beckford school Christmas fair, where I will be judging the cake competition! How funny is that?! Beckford school is one of my favourite places in the world and somewhere that is very close to my heart (as well as being very close to my shop) many of our lovely customers are Beckford mummies (and daddies), but also I used to be a pupil there, and both my first and last days at Beckford are still vivid memories, and I can honestly say that I had the most fabulous time there, even though it was school, and I guess that's saying something!! I judged the competition last year and took my sidekick Leon (our sconemaster) along to help me, and we found it so hard to choose the winners.

Just a quick note to say congratulations to our very own team Boo-er Leon (AKA Our scone master) who got engaged this weekend to the equally fabulous and utterly gorgeous Vanessa (can you tell that I love her too!!??) Leon got down on one knee at Kings Cross station (there is a reason behind this) and then off they went (much to Vanessa's suprise) to Paris for the weekend. Goldie's Hen party tea at bake-a-boo

This weekend we celebrated Goldie's hen party at bake-a-boo. The girls had afternoon tea with a few extras, and goldies friends brought lots of things to add to the fun. Perhaps the funniest 'extra' was the fact that after we closed Goldie and co stayed a little bit longer....waiting for the arrival of a very special guest!! A man dressed as a police man arrived, but he was no ordinary policeman!! He was a STRIPPER!! I can't believe we had a stripper at bake-a-boo! It was very amusing, and the squealing of the girls and chanting 'off off off off' was even more hilarious! It was very 'un' bake-a-boo, but gave us something to giggle about, although I was probably more concerned about my chandeliers than looking at him, when he started swinging his shirt around the place! Typical me, but we had a laugh and Goldie and her girls were all so lovely. Congratulations Goldie xxx

Here's some pictures of a 1st birthday party we had at bake-a-boo for little Iris. The party had exclusive hire of bake-a-boo on a Sunday morning so the little'uns could have free reign. Guests drank tea and coffee, and some champagne to toast Iris, whilst nibbling finger sandwiches, salads, mini pitta pizzas and lots of mini cakes and scones - as well as Iris's giant cupcake birthday cake. Today we were involved with a great project called 'Love Camden' - the campaign and it's directory of camdens great places to see, eat and do was launched today at an event at the Wellcome Collection, which we attended. We also supplied the going home treat - a bagged red cupcake with the yellow heart from the logo, one for everyone who attended the event.

We were very proud to be a part of this campaign and to be included in the directory, which taught me a lot about the great places there are, and I have grown up in the borough of Camden most of my life!

But we are even more proud that the Leader of Camden Council Keith Moffet was interviewed on BBC London Radio breakfast show this morning and he mentioned bake-a-boo as a great 'Hidden Gem' in Camden.

Vegan wedding cupcakes

Here's some cakes we did for Jonathan and Catherine's wedding. Both Jonathan and Catherine are vegans, and so are many of their friends, so we made all there cupcakes vegan, they had two flavours, chocolate and coffee and two different designs (which keeps it lovely and simple for us!!) They had lots of orange flowers like gerbera's and daisies in their decorations and floral arrnagements, so they wanted to incorporate the orange and the flowers into the cakes, hence why we used daises in white and orange. Then they had a vegan fruit cake for the top cake, which we topped with the same flowers and an ornage ribbon. I saw Jonathan and Catherine the day the set off on Honeymoon and they were so happy with the cakes and said that their guests couldn't believe that they were all vegan. The sweetest story.......

This is the cutest story.. Last week we had our first proposal at bake-a-boo. Nick brought Vicki to bake-a-boo for afternoon tea, but not before Nick and I did lots of planning. He wanted to propose at bake-a-boo, as Vicki loves tea rooms and cake shops, and after some research, Nick decided bake-a-boo was the perfect place. Through a series of emails and phonecalls, we planned the tea and to create some cupcakes with 'marry me?' wriiten on them, that we would present to Vicki for the big moment. As they ate through their afternoon tea and Nick got increasingly nervous, we eventually told Vicki we had a suprise for her and presented her with the covered 'marry me?' cupcakes. Nick lifted the cover and then went round to Vicki's chair and got down on one knee to pop the question.....of course Vicki said yes, as the whole shop then starting clapping and cheering, one lady was even in tears! It was a very special moment, that I was very excited to be a part of, they were such a lovely couple. Congratulations Nick and Vicki xx

The summer is nearly over and everyone is getting ready to go back to school, we've been having fun over the summer, hosting our summer workshops for children at bake-a-boo. We've had a weekly workshop with different theme & activities. They have all proved very popular, so they will definately be back in the next school holiday, by popular demand....can't wait for half term week...halloween! yey! Last week we did 200 cupcakes for Tun and Zibby for their wedding. They wanted natural colours and toppings, so we did raspberry icing and blackberry icings coloured with raspberries and blackberries and then just a vanilla butter icing, topped with daisies cherries and pastel sprinkles, we also did some vegan, for their vegan guests, not shown here, these were topped with butterflies. Tun and Zibby celebrated their wedding in the botanical garden with food made by all their friends! We hope you had a fantastic day. Congratulations Tun & Zibby x

Last Saturday he had his housewarming party and the theme was 'Simply Red' There was lots of dedications to Mick Hucknall, and nearly all the food was red or Orange (to match Mick's hair!!) We made Leon a load of these mini red and orange cupcake with red sponge too and we also slipped in two huge red and orange vodka jellies with glitter!! Last weekend we celebrated Zoe's Hen party at bake-a-boo. Zoe and her many hen's sipped tea and indulged in our yummy afternoon tea menu, enjoyed retro sweeties in their favour boxes and wrote wishes for Zoe in her keepsake wish box. We hope Zoe enjoys her wedding later this month. Congratulations Zoe! x

Farewell cupcakes for Dylis

Last Saturday we did some cupcakes for Dylis' leaving party as she is retiring as the Headteacher of Beckford School at the end of term, as Beckford is our local school, and we often make cakes for the school, they ordered some cupcakes from us. I also attended the party, which was held on the 4th of July, and was entiled 'Dylis' independence day' as she is also American. The theme for the party was the Queen Mary, as she came to the UK as a child from New York on the Queen Mary boat with her family. It was a lovely party and extremely sentimental and nostalgic for me as I also went to Beckford School, and I even saw some of my teachers there from when I was 7 years old!! Very strange. Cupcakes went down well and the party ended with a great firework display. Farewell Dylis, good luck xx

The perfect brew..

We are now offerering a delicious new range of loose teas. We have teamed up with local supplier W Martyn to stock their delicious tea blends to serve with your cakes in the shop, and you can also take a box home with you. We have a few varieties including classic black teas like English breakfas and Assam, as well as herbal teas, fruit teas a special blends like summer tea (my favourite!!) The team at bake-a-boo had a tea tasting last week after our lunch (see the image of our mess below!), where we tasted all the different teas, and we all chose our favourites, but all agreed that this tea is just perfect....it's real tea and it's yummy, but also W Martyn, is such a great supplier, they are local and have been around since 1897! It's a real family run business, with a gorgeous old fashioned shop, which I'm sure hasn't changed much since 1897! It's definately worth a visit to W Martyn in Muswell Hill, just for the experience, and for the delicious smells too! But if you can't make it there, come and visit bake-a-boo and we will make you the perfect brew! x

Last Thursday we did some cupcakes for ex Big Brother twins Sam & Amanda's 21st birthday party. The girls love pink, so we created a tower of baby pink, pink and hot pink cupcakes topped with pink, white and silver decorations and lots of sparkle, and finished the stand with sweeties, pink roses and butterflies. The girls loved the cakes. Michelle and I went along to the party, which was on a boat on the Thames, where the pink and sparkly theme continued with candy floss machines, chocolate fountains, and a great company called Jinny Rainbow doing these amazing glitter tattoos...Michelle and I had to get one!! Everyone working on this event was really lovely, and we had a great time. Happy Birthday Samanda!! xx

As we mentioned yesterday, we are now well into wedding season, a subject picked up on yesterday by the Cupcakes take the cake blog, who featured their favourite 'creative wedding cupcake ideas' taken from cupcakes seen on Flickr, and they included our 'Marry Me?' cupcakes. Even though these cupcakes were not for a wedding, they seemed relevant. We made these cupcakes a while ago now for a lady to propose to her guy after a dinner - he, of course said yes! Anyway, as we mentioned earlier this week, cupcakes take the cake is one of our fave blogs, so thanks for continuing to mention us from accross the pond guys! x

Hen Party fever at bake-a-boo

We are now well into wedding season, and bake-a-boo has been busy baking lots of wedding cupcakes, but we're also celebrating lots of hen parties, with tea parties at bake-a-boo, as well as making cupcakes for hen parties outside of bake-a-boo. This week has been volunteer week. We did some cakes for the lovely people at BrAVA - The Brent Association for Voluntary Action, for an event they were doing as part of the weeks events. They had vanilla, chocolate and strawberry cakes. Here's some cupcakes we did for a little gathering for the screening of Fawlty Towers Re-opened, this was particulary important to me as my grandfather was Ballard Berkeley, who played Major Gowen in Fawtly Towers. Touchingly described in the programme, by John Cleese, as a 'true English Gentleman'. So we all had yummy bake-a-boo mini cupcakes in his honour......as well as Victoria sponge....and banana cake!!!

This weekend we celebrated Julia's Hen party at bake-a-boo, 20 girls in tiaras and pink feather boas came to us for tea and fun, in true lady-like style. The girls indulged in bake-a-boo's afternoon tea, whilst making wish cards for a special box that we had prepared for Julia. The afternoon was then rounded of with a cupcake decorating workshop, and then apparantly they were off to bar salsa to work off their cupcakes!! Watching a sea of girls walking down the street with pink boa's tiaras and balloons was a fabulous sight! Congrats Julia! x

Today we had an order for 8 cakes. Mum Rosemary ordered them for he daughter Elise's 30th birthday, and they all had to be gluten and dairy free. We only had to write on two of them, the only other request for the rest of the cakes was to have fruits on top. Happy birthday Elise, we hope the party was a huge success!

Wendy & Mark's Wedding Cupcakes

This Sunday we did the cakes for Wendy and Mark's wedding, and what a lovely day is was! They had a moroccan themed wedding, in a marquee on a farm, with lots of lanterns, drapes and lushious fabrics. The tables were scattered with cinnamon sticks, chillis, dried oranges and peacock feathers, this is where we took our inspirtaion for the cakes from. We used gold cupcake cases as there was lots of gold in the wedding, with gold balls in different sizes and gold flowers, then we had some of the cupcakes in a teal coloured icing in keeping with the peacock feathers and even topped some with sugar paste chillies! And then we had some with fudge on top, the colour was right, but I think it was more because Wendy loved the fudge, she dived straight for that one when e had our sample meeting. The display was then finished off with some fresh cream roses and scattered rose petals. Anyway Wendy and Mark were a lovely couple to work with and I wish them all the best, I think they are currently sunning themselves in Belize on Honeymoon, lucky them!!

This week we celebrated Rhea's 8th Birthday at bake-a-boo. Because Rhea is Lactose intolerant, her mum Tracy knew that we would be able to offer her some treats that were safe for her to eat, so we made her a dairy free birthday cake, some dairy free sandwiches, and other treats. Rhea and her friends enjoyed their tea and then had fun doing a braclet making worskhop with Michelle. Happy Birthday Rhea!

On Good Friday, some of us had a great Friday at bake-a-boo as we celebrated Tori Star's 3rd birthday party at bake-a-boo. The gorgeous Tori Star celebrated with her friends on their own table of treats where they ate cakes, sandwiches and other goodies with a princess theme, lots of pink, magical sparkle, fairies and glitter, with of course wands and crowns. The adults had their own table with a 'proper' afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and other treats, with tea flowing, of course! And we decorated the place with lots of stars, because that's Tori's name! Hanging stars from the chandeliers, star balloons, star shaped biscuits and sandwiches, and star confetti. Loving the stars!! After lots of eating and a cupcake decorating workshop for the kids, Tori blew out the candles and sparklers on her giant cupcake birthday cake, then all the littleuns went home with a party box each - princess themed boxes for the girlies and pirate themed boxes for the boys. I think this was my favourite party at bake-a-boo so far....can you tell? Happy birthday Tori Star.......here's a slideshow x
